![]() ![]() After Mario removed bowsers crown from his head, the dragon stopped his attack and decided to rest in the arena instead. Maybe the city couldn't handle that power and the dragon escaped it's restraints and destroyed the people who were trying to trap it as a means of self defense. Maybe the villain here isn't the dragon but rather a cities lust for power even if it means forcing an innocent creature to be experimented on and controlled. You can read all the kingdom text on this wiki article. Other text about the great altar in the ruined kingdom implies similar interest in the dragon as well. ![]() Perhaps the eyelets at the top allowed ropes or chains through to anchor something, but it's impossible to say what." Some see them not as swords, but rather nails or stakes. One certainly feels a sense of intentionality in the way they're stuck straight down, as if fallen from the sky. They're thought to be left over from a large battle here in Crumbleden. "Amid the ruins, these swords surely stand out. Even more in-game text suggests the people may have used swords to restrain the dragon from flying away during the enhancement process. While we can't know for sure enhancing the dragon with lightning abilities is what they were trying to accomplish, the dragon's electrical powers didn't really feel like natural abilities a dragon would have. ![]() Some have theorized that the circular plaza atop the tower was built for a standoff of some kind." " -whatever they'd hoped to accomplish by harnessing the fearsome power of lightning remains unclear. While the Ruined Dragon's strength was powerful on it's own, the advanced society of crumpleden likely believed the ruined dragons power could not only be controlled but also enhanced.Īctual in game text suggests this could be possible. I believe they saw the dragon flying above their city as an opportunity. I believe they wanted to wage war with the other kingdoms in hope of expanding their empire. The people of Crumbleden,(A destroyed city inside the ruined kingdom.). That's when I realized who did have a motive for war. Why would the dragon risk his life going to war with an advanced society with the only benefit being the kingdom's destruction? It doesn't make sense. What motivation did the dragon have to destroy this kingdom in the first place? We know the dragon is a sentient intelligent being as he is able to talk to Mario after the boss battle(The dragon says "so.tired." ). However, something has been bothering me. We may have assumed this was due to the dragon instigating a war with the kingdom which the people clearly lost. So yeah, I think it could be paying homage to the series. It is implied by text in the ruined kingdom that the dragon was responsible for it's destruction. I also have no doubt that many developers at Nintendo deeply respect the Souls series since it shares many of their same values when it comes to game design, craftsmanship, game feel, etc. And in the gaming landscape of today, it's hard to imagine they worked on this kingdom for so long without consciously noting similarities to the Souls series. The Souls/borne series has this poetic quality to its darkness that is perfectly replicated here. Who thought we'd ever say such a thing about a Mario game? ![]() They'd look more out of place if you transplanted them into Monster Hunter or Elder Scrolls. You could transplant a knight from Lordran or a hunter from Yharnam into the Ruined Kingdom, and nothing would look out of place. But there's a level of melancholy stylization here that pretty much mirrors the look and feel of the Souls/borne series. Obviously the dark high fantasy genre was a thing before Dark Souls. Click to shrink.I think that might be a tad reductionist. ![]()
